Dept. of books

Partner Publishing at Ink Bleeds Press.

Ink Bleeds Press takes on a small number of authors, one novel at a time. This page explains exactly how it works.

One novel at a time

The press reads one novel query at a time. When a book is taken on, that slot is filled until the project is finished, and no new query is opened in the meantime. This is a one-person press, and it is how every manuscript gets the attention it needs.

Novel queries are currently closed. The slot is filled, so the pitch form is off until it opens again.

What it is

Partnership publishing means the author and the press share the work and the rewards. The author writes the book. The press handles production, publishing and paperwork. The author pays nothing, and both earn only when the book sells.

What the press does

  • Formats the ebook and paperback
  • Designs the cover
  • Assigns an ISBN under the Ink Bleeds Press imprint
  • Does a final proofread
  • Publishes on Amazon and other ebook retailers
  • Makes the book available to libraries and for order through local bookshops
  • Gives the author a creator page on this site
  • Gives the author's shorts and flash fiction priority consideration meaning they jump to the front of the line and are read first as a preferred contributor.

What the author gets

  • Keeps their copyright
  • A 70/30 split of net profits (70% to the author, 30% to the press), paid quarterly with clear statements
  • The option to buy paperbacks at print cost, with no minimum order, keeping everything earned from selling them
  • Final approval of the cover and proof before anything goes live

What the press doesn't do

Due to the press currently being a small, new, one-human show, the press can't offer an advance. It also can't offer developmental or line editing, so manuscripts need to arrive finished and already edited. Authors who need an editor can ask, and the press is happy to point them toward some.

Why not self-publish?

Authors absolutely can, and the press says so honestly. The founder has been through self-publishing. For a first-time author it usually means a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars and 40 to 80 hours of work, plus a learning curve. Authors who enjoy that process should keep 100% of their royalties and go for it. Those who would rather spend that time writing are who this partnership is for.

What the press is looking for

The press only takes on books it believes will sell, so it is selective, and it will be honest if a book isn't the right fit. That isn't a judgment on the writing. It's about being fair to both sides. Work should meet the submission guidelines.

The agreement

Every author signs a plain-language Publishing Partnership Agreement. The press is happy to answer questions before anyone commits to anything, and encourages authors to have someone they trust read it first.

Novel queries are closed

The slot is filled

The press takes one novel query at a time, and that one is taken. The pitch form is off while the slot is filled. Check back here: this page carries the current status, and the form returns when the slot opens.
