The Experiment
by
When I determined that the world
was not fit for human consumption,
I decided to no longer be human.
I opened myself up, pulled out the bones
and ironed the rest into something
resembling a very large pretzel.
I still had eyes, a nose, and a mouth
very much like a human,
and on some level I still had a brain which,
no matter how hard I tried to forget,
I realized that this was going to be a limitation
I’d have to accept.
I rolled myself down the street past staring faces
that seemed to envy me at the same time.
“Don’t envy me!” I wanted to shout out
but my mouth could no longer form the words.
Plus, I no longer remembered where I lived
or how I made it to that point.
